Synthetic biology offers the opportunity to build custom‐designed biological systems with desirable properties, such as disease detection and monitoring or bioproduction of valuable compounds. In article number 1800280 , Javier Santos‐Moreno and Yolanda Schaerli review how such an engineering approach has been recently applied to develop pro‐ and eukaryotic systems that carry genetically encoded programs for spatial pattern formation.
