The American Medical Association (AMA) is telling states to halt the use of prior authorizations for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment and to provide adequate pain relief via opioid prescriptions. These recommendations are needed to stem the continuing increases in opioid overdoses, according to the AMA. Despite a 44% decrease in opioid prescribing nationwide over the past 10 years, drug‐related overdoses and deaths are still increasing.
