It's well known that contingency management, in which patients are given monetary rewards for negative drug tests, is the best — i.e., most effective — treatment for stimulant use disorders. As the country gets deeper into a methamphetamine addiction epidemic, isn't it time to reconsider the federal ban on paying patients more than $75 a year? The ridiculous assertion that such payments are kickbacks — inducements to patients to go to treatment centers — is getting hollower and hollower. Let's hope this administration changes the message. Clinical trials of medications have proven less than significant. Also see “HHS OIG doubles down on constraints against contingency management” ( ADAW , Aug. 24, 2020). The final rule banning higher payments was published in January.
