If policymakers don't consider the harm‐reduction workforce to be essential personnel as communities fight the dual scourges of rising drug overdoses and COVID‐19, a strong argument can be made that substance use treatment organizations will feel the negative effects as well. For individuals with a history of mistreatment in service systems, a referral to treatment that's made by a harm‐reduction organization that has earned their trust may be the only chance to get them into other effective care.
