“Words matter” is the refrain of anti‐stigma proponents in the United States, who state that person‐first language will improve attitudes toward drug users. But a recent study conducted in the U.K. has found that portraying people as having adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) does far more to reduce stigma than changing language, which does nothing.
