“One step forward, two steps back” has defined the effort to gain the go‐ahead to establish a safe consumption site for injection drug users in the United States. But developments in the courts and the research community in recent weeks have reinforced a sense of cautious optimism among those who see safe consumption spaces as a sound and essential public health response to the opioid overdose crisis.
