When the January 2020 edition of Medicare & You , the guide the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issues to beneficiaries every year, was released, there was a brief description of the new coverage benefit for Medicare beneficiaries with opioid use disorders (OUDs): treatment for opioid use disorders, including methadone maintenance in an opioid treatment program. However, the booklet does not include anything explicit, and this can lead to Medicare beneficiaries not seeking needed treatment, according to a study by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which also reviewed the fall 2019 edition of Medicare & You and found a similar lack of information.
