If any state's example can be used to demonstrate how alcohol problems generally get shortchanged in the nation's policy discussions, Alaska offers a strong case. Newly released reports from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority show that of the more than $3.45 billion in estimated total costs attributed to substance misuse in the state in 2018, alcohol misuse accounted for nearly $2.4 billion, or around seven of every 10 dollars in health care costs, lost productivity and other adverse impacts.
