Inconsistencies abound in how states handle MAT access under Medicaid

A report commissioned by Congress suggests that while states have made some progress in lifting barriers to medication treatment access for Medicaid beneficiaries with opioid use disorder (OUD), some important obstacles to expanded access remain. Among the inconsistencies in state regulation, the report found a decreasing tendency to assign preferred status to medication‐assisted treatment (MAT) drugs at the same time that prior authorization requirements are declining, as well as more frequent restrictions on MAT for OUD than on medications to treat alcohol use disorders.
