After the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's announcement of its long‐awaited proposals on 42 CFR Part 2 last month — which came at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, when the Aug. 26 issue of ADAW was already out the door and our annual skip week was coming up — we took a couple days off in the glorious Adirondacks of New York state. We brought The Opioid Epidemic: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press) by powerhouse team Yngvild Olsen, M.D., and Joshua M. Sharfstein, M.D. There has been a tidal wave — several tidal waves — of books on the opioid epidemic, but this one is by experts who have been in the trenches for years, Olsen as medical director of opioid treatment programs and her husband, Sharfstein, as a public health official. We enjoyed reading it, not only because we know the authors, but because they know what they were talking about. It's what book reviewers sometimes call “readable,” meaning it has entertainment, not just educational, value, perhaps. But it doesn't shy away from any of the tough questions: the role of 12‐Steps, prescription drug monitoring programs and how to define recovery.
