Plans for the urban development of Dongtan, an alluvial island in the Yangtze River, close to Shanghai, have captured the world's imagination: Dongtan as a model scheme has become synonymous with the very notion of the ‘eco‐city’, representing China’s commitment to sustainability to the world. The Editor of AD Helen Castle met Peter Head, Director and Head of Global Planning Business at Arup in their London offices, to find out more about their masterplan for the city and the design process behind it.
