Abstract The 1970s was a time of profound change in the life of AD. Printing methods radically changed to include a lot more colour, the editorial board comprised a healthy generational mix and, by the middle of the decade, the magazine turned to book form. Guest‐editor Samantha Hardingham discovers how the magazine came into its own by publishing everything from ideas on paper to the working details of a sports stadium whilst maintaining a healthy ongoing dialogue between its contributors and readers.
