Grand theories cannot always provide the answer to local problems. In line with a tenet of neo‐Confucian philosophy, Guest‐Editors Pingping Dou and Andong Lu and architect and researcher Lu Feng together co‐convened the Gewu Workshop in Nanjing in summer 2015 to showcase different types of enquiry. The 10 invited participants, ranging from architects to historians and theorists, each offered their analysis of and vision for a disused area on the outskirts of historic Nanjing. Displayed in a subsequent exhibition, their proposals encourage an investigative and place‐based mentality in dealing with such complex urban sites.
