The common practice of leaving lighting design until last may be diminishing architectural potential. Xin Zhang , who teaches and leads a research team at Tsinghua University, has been exploring ways of using lighting concepts to inform the formulation of architectural ideas since 2009. His experience through his work with various architects shows how involving lighting engineers from the initial phases of design can greatly enhance the atmospheric qualities of built projects.
