Anodyne, internationally identical urban environments are leaving the human spirit bereft. According to Xinggang Li – a practising architect and visiting professor at Tianjin University – what is needed is an injection of poetics and a heightened awareness of context. Here he sets out the vision on which his award‐winning architectural office Atelier Li Xinggang bases its work, and highlights some of its recent projects where an interrelationship between the artificial and the natural makes for inspiring and harmonious settings in which to live, learn or play.
