As a newly qualified female architect in early 1990s India, Anupama Kundoo 's first instinct was to seek to live as independently and lightly as possible – and to help others to do likewise. A self‐build project intended to be temporary turned into a lifestyle, and led to a career focused on engaging local workers in eco‐minded building that marries new technology with familiar materials. Now based in Madrid, she describes her journey so far, including her own built work and her doctoral studies of a project involving mud dwellings fired to permanence when fully built.
