Overshadowed by the large‐scale and often exaggerated architectural expressions produced by architectural firms with a global reach, the work of local practices in the Gulf has not gained widespread recognition for alternative approaches to the context. Here Guest‐Editors George Katodrytis and Kevin Mitchell profile the work of four emerging studios – dxb.lab, X‐Architects and SHAPE Architecture Practice and Research, based in the UAE, and AGi Architects, with offices in Kuwait and Spain – highlighting the challenges that indigenous studios in the region encounter.
