Japan‐based architect and academic Tom Daniell puts out a call to architects, beseeching them not to lose sight of their role as creative inventors. Rather than being diverted into despair by the present confluence of ecological, economic and political crises, architects should be providing much needed optimism, thinking beyond the current situation with utopian visions. He challenges the view that future innovation is to be located in collective collaborations, regarding ‘true innovators’ to be individuals, such as Rem Koolhaas, Hernan Diaz Alonso or Philippe Rahm, who provide the essential entrepreneurial catalyst for the interaction of other people and ideas.
