Often designing in remote locations, Arup Associates have consciously developed an approach that is both locally and culturally responsive, while being flexible enough to scale up to the ambitions of a scheme. Paul Brislin , guest‐editor of this issue and a director at Arup Associates, describes their design treatment for an arts facility and a mosque in Saudi Arabia as well as for the Druk White Lotus School in Ladakh, India, which by 2014 will be an educational campus comprising a senior school and library as well as the existing infant and junior schools.
