Stepping into the vacuum left by state and public services, architecture departments in universities have become key players in the development of their regions. As guest‐editor of this issue, Mariana Leguía explains how this has led to a new teaching and research model, where universities act as mediators between government, private investors, NGOs and local communities. She looks at the activities of institutions in Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Brazil that are proactive in this field. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
