Summary This paper applies the geometrical observation of security regions in distribution network enhancement. Firstly, the concepts of distribution system security region (DSSR) and total supply capability (TSC) curve are introduced. Secondly, to observe DSSR and TSC more intuitively, new geometrical shape figures of DSSR such as the spiral figure of the region, the radar figure of boundary, and the concave figure of the boundary are proposed. New geometrical indexes, such as radius of DSSR, area of shape figure, shape distortion indexes and concavity indexes are also proposed. The proposed indexes and figures can fully describe the security and efficiency of a given distribution network from the perspective of the size and shape of DSSR. Thirdly, the indexes family are proposed, and the concrete method of the distribution network enhancement is presented based on the indexes family. Finally, the expanded IEEE‐RBTS‐BUS4 case is used to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can intuitively show the changes of the enhanced distribution network in the terms of DSSR and TSC curves. This paper proposes a new observation method and analysis tool for the distribution network from the perspective of security and efficiency, which is an important supplement to the traditional enhancement of the distribution network.
