This paper presents a brief review of state‐of‐the‐art operation and control strategies of distributed energy resources, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles in the microgrid. Control of microgrid with a considerable number of distributed energy resources, small energy storage units, and electric vehicles require flexible and scalable control strategies. The objective of this paper is to review the latest centralized, decentralized, multi‐agent, model predictive, cooperative, and competitive control strategies to control and coordinate the distributed energy resources, energy storage systems, and electrical vehicles in microgrid. This paper also addresses the internet of things‐based control strategies in microgrid. Finally, a conceptual framework is presented with intelligent agent and internet of things‐based control to address the issues related to the future clustered microgrids.
