While the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), scheduled for launch on 11 February, is expected to continue Landsat's more than 40‐year continuous record of providing Earth surface data, the future of the program beyond that mission—which will be renamed as Landsat 8 after its initial space checkout phase—is unclear, according to an official with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
