One major requirement for a hematopoietic cell culture system is that cell cultivation be controlled. The control and regulation of the pO 2 and the pH value which greatly influence the differentiation of hematopoietic cells are of special importance. Two novel bioreactors are presented: a stirred system for the stroma‐free suspension culture and a fixed‐bed reactor for the immobilized coculture of stromal and hematopoietic cells on porous microcarriers. Both production systems have a process control. For comparative studies on a small scale miniaturized systems were developed.
