Due to the diffusion‐limited mass transport in biofilms the mathematical description of biofilm reactors or natural biofilm systems needs a more sophisticated framework compared to conventional bioreactors with suspended biomass. One‐dimensional simulation tools can be used to describe both mass transport and substrate utilization in biofilm reactors and small rivers.
