The principal aims of this work were the investigation of the comminution behavior of several, mainly nonbrittle organic materials and a description of the comminution impact on the biodegradability of the material. Thus, comminution experiments were carried out in a cutting mill. The results were described with the help of the comminution degree in combination with the release of dissolved organic components. Furthermore, a discussion of the comminution results considering the mechanical strength under cutting and shear load was undertaken. Concerning the improvement of the biodegradability of organic materials, which were characterized through their degradation under anaerobic conditions, the effects of comminution depend on the biodegradability of the noncomminuted material. A significant improvement occurs in the case of materials with a low degradability as a result of an increased surface area, the release of dissolved organic components and the destruction of material structures.
