Starting from an exact solution for the velocity profile and the free surface the influence of side walls on a gravity driven thin film flow is studied in detail. A parameter study shows the ‘velocity overshoot’ — a structural change in the velocity profile and its dependence to the capillary elevation of the fluid at the side walls.
