Cumulative experiences in the treatment of 231 patients with probenecid reconfirm the effectiveness of this agent in the management of gout. Significant characteristics of the patient group and their responses to therapy are described. The observations reported suggest that tophaceous and nontophaceous gout may be clinical varieties rather than stages of gout.
