Most of the properties of composites lie in between the properties of the particular components and obtaining values that lie well outside this range is unusual. In this paper we show how this might be done for the thermal expansion coefficient by using the Poisson effect. The material properties that would be required for such a composite have been investigated for a specific application, that of the thermal compensation of a Bragg fibre grating.
