Increasing demand for high‐quality steel plates requires the use of modern computer‐aided methods of quality assurance and quality control. In the Plate Department of Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG production efficiency has been enhanced by the use of methods for the pre‐calculation of plate properties using information from large databases of plate production experience. These methods support quality assurance and quality control, and facilitate more effective work flow with production time savings. To achieve further improvements in the quality of the heavy steel plates with sufficient homogeneity and reproducibility will require consistent use of the pre‐calculation method and database development. The structure and function of these new tools are described.
