Cast samples containing a series of ‘steps’ of different thickness and made of two typical superduplex stainless steel grades were manufactured. A numerical simulation code has been employed for the evaluation of fluidodynamics and thermal fields induced during casting as well as for the analysis of the subsequent solidification and cooling of the two castings. The distribution of mass, temperature and solidification and cooling‐related parameters were compared to the microstructural features such as the amount of phases and elemental partition coefficients in order to validate the numerical simulation tool and to individuate the guidelines for ‘calibrating’ it, in view of its application to industrial duplex and superduplex castings.
