During the 19 th century, soil science in Germany developed from a combination of agriculture and both geology and forestry. Further research developments described in this review include pedology, soil classification and mapping, soil chemistry and mineralogy, soil physics, and ecosystem research. Beside this, the German Society of Soil Science and their relations to the International Society (Union) of Soil Science are shortly introduced.
