In contrast to the classical Simulated Moving Bed concept, where the process is operated at constant parameters, recently new operating modes with modulations of parameters during the switching intervals were developed. A new operating mode with a modulation of the feed concentration during the switching intervals, easily appplicable to existing SMB plants, overcomes the difficulties of other operating modes with cyclic variations of parameters, e.g., alternating load of the pumps, the need for complicated control algorithms, or difficult design procedures.
