The temporary pressure drop phenomenon in fine powder fluidised beds after switching fluidisation gases was investigated and the underlying mechanisms on the intensity and duration were identified. The following mechanisms causing the transition effect were identified. Also at high operating temperatures, as occurring in the basic oxygen steel making process, volume reduction due to reactions and sintering effects were found.
