Poly(vinyl chloride) based membrane of Hematoporphyrin IX exhibits good potentiometric response for Zn 2+ over a wide concentration range (5×10 −5 −1×10 −1  mol dm −3 ) with a slope of 28.6 mV per decade of Zn 2+ concentration. The response time of the sensor is as fast as 30 s and it has been used for a period of three months. It exhibits selective response towards Zn 2+ in comparision to alkali, alkaline earth, and heavy metal ions and functions satisfactorily in the pH range 2.0 to 5.5.
