Advanced Materials has come a long way since its modest beginning in 1989 as a “piggy back” journal in Angewandte Chemie . Some of its more recent achievements as well as innovations to foster the further development of the journal are presented in this Editorial. The ways in which the success of a journal can be measured in terms of quality and popularity are also discussed.
