The alignment of liquid crystals on monolayers assembled on ultra‐thin gold substrates is demonstrated. Gold substrates with a high transparency can be produced and the liquid crystal alignment can be tuned (see Figure) by the appropriate selection of the thiols and gold deposition conditions. Twisted nematic electro‐optical cells equipped with these alignment layers exhibit excellent switching voltages and switching kinetics.
