Simple modification of amino‐terminated self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) on glass with a fluorophore and a metal coordinating functionality allows the surface of the monolayer to be used as a recognition pattern for metal ion sensing (see Figure). This design has an internal read‐out system, which is particularly desirable since no additional labels are required for the transduction mechanism.
