Abstract In this paper we review recent research undertaken with the aim of developing a compression test apparatus that simulates the application of mechanical forces to which initiator devices may be typically subjected during handling. This resulted in the development of two different apparatuses, one supplied pressure by means of a weighted beam and the other by using a pneumatic piston. The latter unit has also been used to study the response of initiator devices to impact. Additionally, we discuss some of the key information that would be required in order to develop a safety‐in‐handling hazard index.
