Crystal and glass phase forming region in BaO‐B 2 O 3 ‐Al 2 O 3 system was investigated by floating zone pulling down method. The formed phase of the crystal and the glass were dependent on the composition and the growth procedures. The crystal and the glass were characterized from the viewpoint of the second harmonic generation (SHG). Weak SHG was observed at the composition of 5 mol% Al 2 O 3 even on the glass. SHG profile as well as the β ‐BaB 2 O 4 crystal was observed for the crystals grown from melt surrounding the BaB 2 O 4 composition.
