In order to coordinate the use of robotic and remotely operated telescopes in networks – like Göttingen's MOnitoring NEtwork of Telescopes (MONET) – a standard format for the exchange of observing requests and reports is needed. I describe the benefits of Remote Telescope Markup Language (RTML), an XML‐based protocol originally devel‐oped by the Hands‐On Universe Project, which is being used and further developed by several robotic telescope projects and firms.
