There have been an increasing number of candidates for the gamma‐ray bursts/supernovae connection. Among these, the Type Ic SN 1998bw and the Type IIn SN 1997cy are characterized by their extremely large explosion energy, well in excess of 10 52 erg, and thus have been called hypernovae. Here we suggest that the peculiar Type Ic SN 1997ef is another hypernova.
