Abstract It is shown by means of PIC (particle‐in‐cell) simulations that in magnetized plasmas with pressure gradients local charge separation occurs due to different ion and electron gyration radii. The dimensionless ratio χ = n pl m /( ϵ 0 B 2 ) being the dielectric susceptibility (with the plasma density n pl , the mass m and the magnetic field strength B ) is the main parameter in the analysis.
