Starting from a quantum statistical approach, general expressions are given for the shape of spectral lines in dense plasmas. Special attention is paid to the dynamical treatment of the ionic microfield. As an example for the application of the theory of line profiles, the diagnostics of short‐pulse laser induced plasmas is considered.
