A body of theory for the prediction of thermal instabilities in the plasma edge and application to interpretation of experimental phenomena are summarized. The evidence suggests that thermal instabilities are involved in the formation of “divertor MARFEs” and MARFEs in the edge plasma, in confinement degradation over the course of a discharge, and in radiative collapse leading to disruptions.
