We review some recent work by T. Damour and the author [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 (2000) 920] on the chaotic behaviour of the gravitational field in the vicinity of a spacelike singularity in M‐theory and superstring models. We stress in particular the rôle of the massless p ‐forms in this context.
