A completely analytical discussion of the non‐equilibrium energy distribution for a simple one‐dimensional model of hot electron relaxation due to the emission of optical phonons is possible. The model, its exact solution, and the application to describe a spectacular experiment by Leitenstorfer et al. emerged in a pleasant atmosphere of mutual stimulation between my group and R. Zimmermann.
