The cover picture of this issue shows a terahertz emission spectrum of a Si : P laser, pumped by a CO 2 laser and recorded by Fourier transform spectrometry. The single emission line has been identified as originating from the intracenter 2p 0 → 1s(T 2 ) transition of optically excited silicon doped by phosphorus, as shown in the scheme of optical and non‐radiative transitions. The paper [1] was selected as Editor's Choice for this issue of phys. stat. sol. (b). The first author, Heinz‐Wilhelm Hübers, is Head of the Department of Far‐Infrared Technology at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Berlin, where he is involved in the development of detectors and solid state lasers for the terahertz frequency range and of heterodyne receivers for various stratospheric and atmospheric research projects.
