Abstract The Pan‐American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) on “Physics and Technology at the Nanometer Scale” was held in San Jose, Costa Rica, June 25–July 3, 2001. This PASI school was the first to focus on recent developments in various areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology in condensed matter systems such as quantum dots, molecular electronics, carbon nanotubes, spintronics, buckyballs, scanning probe techniques, etc. PASI is a joint program supported by the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy, designed to facilitate the interaction of participants from all countries in the Americas at advanced graduate and postgraduate levels.
