A semi‐classical approach is developed to describe photon‐assisted tunnelling. The method takes into account multi‐photon processes which can significantly affect tunnelling in fairly strong oscillating electric field. The effects of suppression and enhancement of tunneling are predicted. Governing parameters and tunnelling matrix elements are found and a transition equation is derived.
